Choosing the Size of Your Spa

Spas are available in many different sizes, ranging from small spas perfect for two people to extra-large ones that can accommodate more than 7 people! So, which spa is best for your needs? To help you answer this question, we will present the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of each dimension so that you can choose the right size and shape for your future relaxation device.

Finding the right size is a crucial decision when choosing your spa. Size is a key element; it will define the necessary space, cost, possible shapes and accessories, as well as the number of people that can be seated, and even energy efficiency and associated costs. Your goal is to find a spa size that meets your family’s needs while integrating well into your garden and budget.

The Coco Spa Nordik is available in a diameter of 180 cm and can accommodate up to 6 people.

Types of SPAs

The first thing you need to know about spa sizes is the common dimensions. Spas typically have a width ranging from 1.50 m to 2.75 m and a height ranging from 74 cm to 100 cm. Sizes and dimensions vary greatly among different types of spas.

There are 3 groups of spas: small spas, medium-sized spas, and large spas. Small spas can accommodate between 2 and 4 people.

Medium-sized spas can accommodate from 4 to 6 people, and large spas can comfortably accommodate 7 people or more.

Sizes and cost

In addition to the number of people you wish to accommodate, also consider the dimensions and cost. Will it fit in the dedicated space? Patios may pose a challenge for large spas, while the outdoor garden space can generally accommodate them without a problem. It’s best to measure the available space accurately before choosing the size. And of course, it’s always important to take cost into account – the larger the spa, the more expensive it will be both in terms of purchase and maintenance.

Here is an overview of common spa dimensions and their average costs: :

Size of the spa dimensions cost

Little Spas (2 – 4 people) 1,63 m – 2,13 m width

75 cm – 90 cm height

3000 € – 5000 €+ for hard-shell spas and 300 to 900 euros for inflatable ones

Medium Spas (4 – 6 people) 1,98 m – 2,36 m width

84cm cm – 100 cm height

5000 € – 12000 € for spas with hard materials and 400 à 1000 euros for the inflatable ones

Big spas (7+ people) 2,40m – 2,90 m width

90 cm – 100 cm height

9000 € – 20000 € for spas with hard materials and 500 – 1300 euros for the inflatables ones

Depending on the quality

It should be noted that dimensions may vary depending on whether it is an in-ground or portable spa. Also, when considering these dimensions, do not forget about the height. The spa’s height impacts the depth and water capacity. An adequate water depth can create a more relaxing experience, ideally reaching approximately shoulder height. Finally, take into account the interior dimension. For instance, a classic inflatable PVC spa with 25cm walls and 230cm in diameter will have interior dimensions reduced to 180cm.

The dropstitch technology of Coco Spa allows for walls of only 5cm in diameter, maximizing the interior volume while limiting the diameter. Thus, a Coco Spa with a diameter of 180cm has interior dimensions of 170cm, comparable to those of a much larger spa with a diameter of 220 to 230cm.

Find the perfect shape

Many prospective spa owners already have a good idea of the ideal shape for their new spa, based on appearance and style. However, the shape also involves practical considerations regarding size. The shape of your spa will have a significant impact on its dimensions, size, and the number of people it can accommodate.

Keep in mind that certain shapes have limits in terms of the number of seats. For instance, square and diamond-shaped spas typically accommodate up to 4 or 8 people due to their four sides. Triangular or corner spas may also accommodate only 2 to 3 people, while round ones depend directly on their radius but are the format that can accommodate the most people.

Always remember that the number of seats has an impact on the size and costs. Larger spas require more electricity to operate, more space in your garden, and generally, a greater number of jets. Here’s what you can expect when choosing between different spa sizes and seating options.

Spas for 2 to 3 people

Small spas that can accommodate 2 to 3 people can be perfect for couples or homes with limited outdoor space. These small spas typically use a single pump for heating, which also functions as a blower, making them quite energy-efficient and less costly to operate compared to larger spas.

Keep in mind that spas for 2 people will typically include 30 to 40 jets or fewer, but this is generally sufficient for two people, as each seat will contain 15 to 20 jets. For spas for 2 or 3 people, you can opt for triangular, square, or round shapes.

Spas for 4 people

Spas for 4 people are one of the most popular sizes as they can accommodate an entire family or a group of friends while still being relatively energy-efficient. Most spas for 4 people only have a single heat pump and blower, typically using 220 V of electricity (but be sure to check with the brand and model to be certain). Spas for 4 people are perfect for small families or couples who like to entertain guests.

Many spas for 4 people will have at least 50 to 60 jets, meaning up to 20 jets per person. You can consider round, square, rectangular, or even diamond or clover-shaped spas when opting for this medium-sized 4-seater.

Spas for 6 people

These spas are perfect for large families or individuals who plan to regularly host guests.

If operating costs are a concern, be sure to check specifications such as the number of jets, water capacity, voltage, and the number of heaters and blowers. Spas that can accommodate 6 people or more typically use 220 V of electricity and may have 2 heaters and blowers. Additionally, expect to have 60 jets or more in a 6-person spa. As a general rule, the more electricity a spa requires to operate, the more it will cost you monthly. If you’re looking for a larger spa while saving money, look for 6-person models that are well-insulated with floor mats and thermal insulation on the surface. Moreover, inflatable spas are more insulating than hard-shell spas, with the walls acting as insulation.

Spas for 7 – 8 people

The largest spas on the market can accommodate 7 to 8 people, or even more! These spas often have over 70 jets and use 2 heaters with at least 1 blower. Although they require more energy to operate and maintain hot water, they are perfect for large families or households that enjoy hosting guests. Be sure to note the exact dimensions of the spa you’re considering before purchasing, as these 7 to 8-person spas often require additional space for installation. We will explain how to measure the space for installing your spa below.

Define your budget

Beware of your electricity budget!

In addition to the initial installation costs, owners are also responsible for the daily operating costs of the spa, including electricity, water, and chemicals.

When purchasing a spa, look for models that are well-insulated with features such as insulated covers, energy-efficient heaters, and low-energy consumption filtration systems. These features can help reduce your monthly energy costs and make your spa more environmentally friendly.

Note that the larger the spa, the more electricity it will require to heat (a spa twice the size will require four times the electricity and water).

Measuring the space for your spa is crucial to ensure a proper fit and installation.

Before purchasing a spa, it’s essential to accurately measure the space in your garden, terrace, or patio to ensure it fits correctly.

Here are some tips for measuring the space for your spa:

Use a measuring tape to determine the length and width of the available space for the spa.

Consider the size of the spa, including its exterior dimensions and the space required for installation and maintenance. Ensure there is enough room for motors, pumps, and pipes, allowing easy access for maintenance.

Leave additional space around the spa to facilitate access and movement.

Consider obstacles such as trees, walls, or fences that could limit the available space.

Check local building regulations or permit requirements for spa installation in your area.

Ensure there is ample space from your power outlet (minimum 2 meters from the spa).

By following these tips, you can ensure that you choose the right size of spa that fits your home and meets your needs. Also, don’t forget to consider the operating and maintenance costs.
